SEDENTARY BEHAVIORS AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY EXPERIENCES OF LATINX OLDER ADULTS: A THEMATIC CONTENT ANALYSIS

Abstract Sedentary behavior (SB) accounts for ~7.5 % of cardiometabolic mortality globally. The burden disease is especially high among Latinx adults and increases with age. Physical activity (PA) crucial maintaining health, yet most older do not meet PA guidelines spend much time in SB. aim this study was to use thematic content analysis describe the meaning SB; experiences, facilitators, barriers adults. Individual interviews were conducted 30 aged 55 75 years (60.7 ± 5.7 years) BMI 20.78 42.13 kg/m2 (29.8 4.4 kg/m2) who enrolled a larger PA. Results showed major themes included SB, consequences barriers, facilitators Meaning subthemes sitting leisure as different from work value statements about laziness. Three participants did understand word “sedentary behaviors”. Consequence effects on physical (circulation, obesity, fatigue) mental health (cognitive psychological). Barriers COVID-19, environment (weather, safety), culture (language, no relationships non communities), constraints (work), conditions (pain illness). Facilitators include self-motivation, family, community support (public parks, gyms, program organizations). These findings shed deeper SB culture. will be key developing culturally appropriate interventions improve specifically adult population.
